Equipment Choice: UNT v.s. Hidden Gym

Cybex and Hammer Strength

Equipment choice can play a more significant role in training outcomes than many people realize. While it may not make or break your progress entirely, using the right machines can lead to more efficient and consistent gains. One key factor to consider is the resistance profile of an exercise machine. But what exactly does that mean? A machine with a good resistance profile aligns the peak resistance with the point in the movement where your target muscle is strongest. This allows you to apply maximal load right where it counts, during the hardest part of the lift, thereby maximizing muscle activation. On the other hand, if the peak resistance occurs when a secondary or assisting muscle is strongest, it can steal the spotlight from the intended muscle group, diminishing the overall effectiveness of the exercise.

At the University of North Texas (UNT) in Denton, I often use the equipment at the campus REC center, but I’ve noticed a real difference compared to the gear at my regular gym in Denton County. The machines at UNT just don’t offer the same resistance profiles or overall feel, which makes me question how much it might affect my results. Will it drastically hinder my progress if I stick to training at UNT instead of my go-to gym? It’s hard to say for sure, but when it comes to getting the most out of my workouts, I’d rather not take chances. That’s why I usually opt for the gym in Denton, where I know the equipment better supports my goals.
